Course Description
While many of us experience pain, there can be significant challenges to its diagnosis and treatment given the interplay of environment, genetics, psychology, and cognition on how pain is perceived. Complex factors have led to an opioid “epidemic”, with more deaths in the US from drug overdose than from HIV, car crashes or gun violence. Roughly, 40% of opioid overdose deaths involve a prescription opioid. In this series, taught by experts at UCSF and across the Bay Area in pain and addiction management, we will explore the patient, provider, health system, and cultural barriers to providing appropriate pain relief, approaches to avoid opiate addition, and treatments for addiction when it does occur.
